Cause of Injury

At 4 months, Shanti was shaken by her caregiver.

Diagnosis - Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS)

Diffuse Axonal Injury. Shanti emerged from vegetative state to a minimally conscious state. She was hospitalized for 6 months.


  • ​Irritability

  • Poor eating

  • Pale skin

  • Seizures

  • Paralysis

Impact to Life

Shanti made remarkable progress with aggressive speech, occupational and physical rehabilitation. Presently, Shanti suffers from severe headaches and seizures as a result of her injury.  She has severe aphasia (a communication disorder caused by brain damage). She is unable to speak, read or write. Shanti has significant memory impairment, poor concentration, and difficulty with sequential planning and organization. Shanti is paraplegic and has required multiple corrective surgeries. She uses a wheelchair. Shanti attends a special education program near her home. She requires close monitoring and long-term therapeutic and medical care.
